Year Six

Hello and welcome to Year 6

Autumn 2025

Year 6 have worked really hard and made a superb start to the year.

In English, Year 6 have been reading Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson - they loved the story and have completed some super work inspired by the book.  They have written their own journey stories and also made persuasive travel brochures to persuade people to travel to the Amazon.

In maths, Year 6 have been working on their arithmetic skills, both with whole numbers, decimals and fractions.  They have also used these skills to solve problems.

In science, Year 6 have enjoyed their topic on light.  They have investigated how light travels, how we see objects, how shadows are created and refraction of light in water.  They have also learnt about the parts of the eye and the function of each.

In art, Year 6 have been studying portraits.  They have learnt how to accurately draw human faces and practised this by drawing portraits of famous people.  They have also created portraits in the style of different artists including Julien Opie, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol.

In History, Year 6 have been studying the Vikings, learning about them as both warriors and farmers in everyday life. They have learnt about the iconic long ships and how they  settled all over northern Europe.  Finally, we considered the evidence they left behind so that we can learn more about them!

Year 6 had an amazing time on their residential trip to PGL at Marchants Hill.  They enjoyed a range of activities such as abseiling, zipwire, climbing, leap of faith, archery, rifle shooting, survivor, problem solving, aeroball, hiking, challenge course and buggy-building.  They challenged themselves, increased in confidence, supported each other and became more independent.  It was lovely to see Year 6 enjoying themselves, working together and having fun.

Summer 2025

Year 6 have thoroughly enjoyed their last half term at Beech Hyde and have created some wonderful memories.

The history topic of World War Two has really captured their interest and imagination.  We have learnt about the causes of World War Two and the significance of the Battle of Britain.  On their World War Two day, many of the children dressed up as evacuees and they all enjoyed finding out what life would have been like for a child during the war.

Year 6 had a great day at RAF London where they took part in a ‘Wartime Classroom’ workshop and found out about the planes used in WW2.

In art, Year 6 have been working on the topic ‘Talking Textiles’.  After looking at the Bayeux Tapestry and examples of work from textile artists Debbie Smyth and Lindsay Taylor, they have designed their own textile collages to represent their memories of Beech Hyde.

Year 6 have also enjoyed taking part in the ‘Dragon’s Den’ project organised and delivered by Harpenden Rotary.  Working in small groups they created a small business, pitched their ideas to a panel of three Dragons, secured their investment, bought the supplies they needed and sold their products and services at our Dragon’s Den Summer Festival.  All the groups made a good profit which the children were very pleased about!

Year 6 have also worked hard practising the end of year production of ‘Rock Bottom’ alongside Year 5.  They performed brilliantly and the feedback from the audience was amazing.

As we come to the end of the year, Year 6 have been thinking about their memories of Beech Hyde and the transition on to secondary school.  We wish them all the best in their new schools!
